CALLING-OUT CEREMONY All is dark and silent, two figures (Allowat/Nutiket and Meteu/Kitchkinet) emerge. Both stand at either side of stage area. Meteu/Kitchkinet begins. M/K "Oh great father from the East, give us Sun; Oh great father from the South, give us Food; Oh great father from the West, give us Water; Oh great father from the North, give us Fire!" He faces each direction with his hands raised in the air. When he says FIRE the fire is lit. M/K "All who are present here are to listen carefully, tonight we shall follow the calling-out ceremony of the Order of the Arrow: a legend which tells us can be attributed to the Delaware Indians; Lenni Lenape Tribe." (pause for a moment) A/N "My brothers, amongst you are ones who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in everyday life. They will have the opportunity to join our Order of honored campers. Brother Kitchkinet, will you search the trail and find those who are ready to take this large step. (Kitchkinet circles around the audience and chooses one of the candidates. Brings forward. Does this with remaining candidates.) A/N "To become a candidate for the Order of the Arrow, you had to be selected by vote of the Scouts in your troop. Since most of those who selected you for this honor are not members of this lodge, it is easy to see that the membership is controlled by young men in troops and not by those who are already Arrow members." M/K "Always remember that you were honored by your peers who elected you because of your camping ability and Scouting spirit. They set you apart as one from whom they expect much. They expect you to give leadership in camping and cheerful service. You must resolve, therefore, not to let them down." A/N "Lastly, I congratulate you on your nomination for Ordeal membership. We will meet again in the near future, you must keep your spirit true for your next step in Scouting." (Principles lead candidates out.) (From here, principles explain where and when they can go for their Ordeal, in private)
